船で配達する運河の郵便屋さん

１０月５日＜October 5＞ 船で配達する運河の郵便屋さん。 フランス編の後半は、運河を取り上げています。昨日は巨大な運河のエレベーターを紹介しましたが、今日は運河を船に乗って配達する郵便屋さんに密着しました。 ヨーロッパでは、運河が今も重要な交通手段の一翼を担っているというのは昨日お伝えしたとおりですが、それを実証してくれるのに最適な生活場面をとらえることができました。それは、運河を使って郵便配達をしている現場でした。昨日のArques（アルク）からほんの数キロ西に位置するSaint-Omer（サン・オマール）の郵便局「La Poste Saint-Omer」では、受け持ちの配達区域の中に運河交通によって生活が成り立っている地区があり、そこへは船に乗って郵便局員が郵便物を配達していました。エコ・ミッションは郵便局員、Jean-Marie Hilmoineさんの後を追い、運河の船に乗って配達する姿を追いました。 今の時期で約20通、夏場はサマー・ハウスの住人（配達区域には別荘も多くあるといったところでした）が一気に増えて200通ぐらいを運ぶことも珍しくないといいます。さすがに船による配達は時間がかかります。陸上の受け持ち分を配達する時間の倍以上もかかって配り終えたのは２時間後でした。このゆったりとした時間の流れも、また、環境に優しい生き方というのではないでしょうか。 ２時間あまり、運河を縦横に走っている間に、ふと日本のあまりに効率、能率を追い求める生活に思いをめぐらすのでした。 5 October, 2000 Mail delivery by canal boat: In one of the areas covered by a post office called La Poste Saint-Omer in Saint-Omer, people need canal transportation to do everything necessary for their life. So, postman at the office has to deliver postal goods for the area by boat. Normally, average number of goods to deliver a day is around 20 at this time of year, though it sometimes leaps up to around 200 in summer when lots of people coming from other areas and stay in their own summer houses (there are many cottages in this area). Well, delivering mails by aboat is a really time-consuming task. Usually it takes you more than twice that overland and it was a 2-hours job today.
