広島市植物公園にやってきました課外学習にきていた子供たちに大人気のエスティマハイブリッド

小さい頃、親に連れられて動物園や植物園、水族館にいった思い出はありませんか。昔は植物も動物も魚も、自分より大きな生き物を見て、また自分と違った形のものが動くのを見て、驚いたことを覚えています。大人になった今、自分より大きく感じる生き物が少なくなったような気がし、その動きも予想できると思い、なにか驚きがないだろうと思っていませんか。だから新しい驚きを求めてバーチャルなテーマパークで、スケール感、斬新な動きをするものを楽しんでいるのではないでしょうか。ファンタジーという便利な言葉に乗り。

広島県では、総面積17.6ha、かつて東洋一と謳われた広島市植物公園を訪問しました。かつては年間40万人を越す入場者数を誇っていたそうです。

園長の井川さんはこういいました。「環境保全といいましても、わたしたちは特にお見せできるものがあるかどうか・・・」と。そこで横田隊長は「園長さんは、いつもこのようなすばらしい植物に囲まれているからそう思うんですよ。ぼくらから見たら、これほど環境に配慮した植物園は、そうそうないと思います。入場者の歩く道にチップを敷き詰めて、自然の感触を残したり、林をゆっくり歩ける配慮がしてあったり。職員の方々も含め、植物のことを思って、毎日仕事をしている。植物を思うということは、自然を思うことじゃないですか。」

その後もエコミッションスタッフから、以前イギリスのＣＡＴ（ECO-MISSION2000@EUROPE参照）にあった水の重みだけで動くロープウェイの話や、先日行った長崎総合科学大学の坂井教授がすすめている枯葉などからメタノールをバイオマスで作り、クルマの燃料にすることを導入し、園内のクルマをすべて園内の枯葉で走らせたらいいとか、さまざまな意見が出ました。

専門員の磯部さんに案内され、スタッフ全員植物園を見てまわりました。やはり説明員の方がおられると、見ている植物がまるで語りかけてくれるような気がするほど、親近感が湧いてきます。すると不思議なもので、どんどん興味が湧いてきます。

植物にはいろいろな種類がいますが、どれが一番進化したものですかと尋ねたところ、ランだそうです。ランにはさまざまな種類があります。これはさまざまな土地に生えるため、その土地に適応した草花になるためだそうです。

植物はきれいなだけでなく、本当に興味深いものです。小さい頃、植物を見て驚いていたのは、本当は植物の不思議に感動していたのだと再認識しました。植物バンザイ。
