アイガモ農法の会

「アイガモちゃん、かわいいー」とレイコさんアイガモのお家とレイコさん

あるテレビ番組の1コーナーにもなって注目を集める「アイガモ農法」。農薬のかわりにアイガモを田に放し、害虫や雑草を食べてもらう農法ですが、最近、横田隊長のお友達の山村レイコさんが始めたということで、お会いしていろいろとお話をうかがってみようと思いました。

山村レイコさんといえば、ご存知のかたも多いと思いますが、エッセイストで国際ラリーライダーという、テレビや雑誌で活躍されているかたです。横田隊長とは昔からのアフリカ仲間で、バイクで世界中を走る姿がとても似合う女性です。そんな大地を駆けるレイコさんが、今度は稲作の新規就農者として大地を耕すことを始めたのです。

「お米もそうですが、クレソンみたいな野菜までも農薬が使われているのを知って、食べ物のことを真剣に考えはじめました。そんなときアイガモ農法を知って、こうなったら自分でお米を作ってみようと思ったんです。」とレイコさん。アイガモとは、マガモやカルガモとアヒルをかけ合わせてできる家畜。食用にされるのがほとんどですが、最近農作業を手伝う優秀な助手として、田んぼで活躍しています。害虫や雑草を食べるだけでなく、水をかきまぜてくれるので、雑草が生えにくくなるそうです。

就農者としては新人のレイコさん。さぞかし田植えも大変だったのかと思ったら、なんと100人もの仲間が集まり、一緒に植えたそうです。またアイガモ農法については、富士山麓アイガモ農法の会の米山さんに指導していただいているそうです。「なるべくお子さんをお持ちのご家族に声をかけました。途上国だと、子供のころから農作業などをしていますから、どうやって農作物ができるのか、日常として知っています。逆に先進国の子供たちは、お米は台所の下から出てくるものだと思っている子もいて。とにかく泥んこになって、知ってもらえればと思ったんですが、ものすごい人数が集まってびっくりしました。」日常のことをちゃんと知ることが大事だとレイコさんは言いました。また「自分自身も学びますね。うるさいことを言わなくても、アイガモや稲はすくすく育つし。農業を頭で考えているうちは難しく思えるのですが、やっているうちにいろんなことがわかってくる。そう、体で感じる農業になってきましたね。」

ここでひとつ疑問が浮かびました。アイガモは田んぼの番人として働きますが、稲刈りが終わったら、いったいどうなるんだろうと。そうしたら実にレイコさんらしい答えが返ってきました。「ペットとして飼ってくださるかたを探しました。おかげさまでみんな里親も見つかりほっとしています。」アイガモは家畜として生まれ育ったわけですから、食用となるのが常です。しかしあまりのかわいさに、そうできなかったレイコさん。少女の心がちらっと顔を見せました。指導をしている米山さんは「やはりアイガモ農法をしていくうえで、持続可能、連鎖というものを考えますね。ですから今、さまざまな人にコンタクトをとり、この農法が定着するように働きかけています。アイガモの行き先も含めて。」

安全でおいしい農作物を作るということは、同時に自然を大いに感じながら生きていくということだそうです。最後に自然や環境についてなにかメッセージをとお二人にうかがうと、共通してでてきたのは「なにもしないで自然や環境のことは語れません。なんでもやってみることです。草木に触れたり、動物に触れたり。失敗したっていいと思います。続けていれば学ぶことも多く、だんだん失敗もなくなりますし。」

昔、コートを着た男のコートを脱がそうと、太陽と風が競争する話がありました。当然ですが、太陽はこの男にコートを脱ぐようにいったのではなく、強い陽射しで男に熱いと気づかせ、コートを脱がすことに成功しました。大人がみんな太陽のような気持ちを持っていたらいいですね。富士山から昇る日の出のような、清清しいお二人に、今日はお会いしました。

来年のために撒く、たい肥の臭いをかぐ二人里子に出されたアイガモたちは元気に遊んでいた
